Getting Started

Unnata® Aerial Yoga was designed for the average person with no aerial experience to benefit from the unique sensations achieved using aerial silks. If you're wondering what to expect, read on.

What happens in a typical class?

This class is designed for all levels of yoga practice, so that everyone from beginner to more advanced yogi can explore at their own level. Class includes postures in the aerial sling and postures on the yoga mat, translating new sensations from the hammock to the floor. The format of the class eases students into the practice, beginning with placing some body weight in the sling and progressively moving more weight into the sling until students are suspended only inches from the ground.

How is this like a yoga class?

When a yoga posture is done correctly, there should be very little pressure in the joints, and space created in the spine in most poses. This is very difficult for most people to achieve on their own. The aerial sling acts like a helper, allowing us to ease into yoga postures without the usual compression in the spine and joints. Gravity will ease you into optimal alignment with very little effort. If you have an existing yoga practice, adding an aerial class will give you new insight into the poses and your body.

Advanced yoga postures like headstand and deep backbends can take years to access on the yoga mat. Using the aerial sling makes these types of postures achievable quickly with the support of the sling. People who already practice inversions are usually thrilled to learn that many of their favorite yoga poses can also be practiced upside-down.

What if I have a medical issue?

If you have any medical issue that prevents you from inverting (glaucoma, heart condition, etc) you may not be able to participate fully. If you have an injury or medical condition, check with your doctor first. Feel free to email me with any questions before signing up.
