Frequently Asked Questions

How much yoga experience do I need?

Anyone from the complete newbie to the experienced yoga teacher can benefit from this class.

What if I can’t do a headstand or a handstand?

No problem, in fact, you’ll probably love the sling! Working in the aerial sling makes it easy for anyone to invert, without any pressure in the joints. And if you do already invert, you’ll enjoy the freedom and ease of exploring different inverted positions or just staying upside-down longer.

This looks pretty advanced. Are you sure I’ll be able to do it?

Many people actually find using the sling to be easier than practicing yoga on the floor! It enhances flexibility and forces you to hang in correct alignment (straight down toward the earth). That said, classes are small with lots of individual attention, and you will never be made to do something you're not comfortable with. Keep in mind that as you build confidence with the practice you may find yourself in positions you didn’t expect!

What if I'm scared?

Don't worry...that's completely normal! The sling was designed to hold up to 1,000 lbs, so rest assured it is more than strong enough to hold your weight! The format of the class is designed to build confidence by easing new students slowly into the practice. Your feet will not leave the ground until you are ready, but that may happen sooner than you think.

Will I get a workout doing this?

Absolutely. Practicing on the sling builds long, lean muscle mass because you are working with your own body weight. It builds deep core strength as well as flexibility, and teaches your entire body to work as a cohesive unit.

How should I prepare for class?

Try not to eat anything heavy up to 2 hours before practicing. Wear comfortable workout or yoga clothes that cover your armpits and knees, remove any bulky jewelry that could get caught, and bring your yoga mat if you have one (if not you can use one of ours). Show up with an open mind and be ready for some fun.

I see all these new forms of yoga popping up everywhere. What makes this yoga?

Yoga is a 5,000 year old practice with a dynamic history. Many teachers both past and present have adapted yoga for specific situations or students. In a typical western yoga class, asanas (postures) are practiced with a focus on breath, alignment, relaxation, and meditation. Yoga philosophies such as non-harming and mindful concentration are emphasized. These elements are all present in an aerial yoga class as well. Think of the sling as a fancy prop, similar to a yoga strap or block, intended to deepen your awareness in each pose. No, it’s not traditional, but it is taught with a deep respect for the yoga tradition.
