Aerial Yoga or Aerial Silks?

What is the difference between Aerial Yoga and Aerial Silks?

One of the most common questions we get from new students is, “What is the difference between Aerial Yoga and Aerial Silks?” Read on if you’re new to aerial and not sure about the difference.

The easiest way to tell the difference is to come and try both! The differences are apparent right away. If you like to be prepared and need a little more info about what to expect, then here are a few of the basics.

Aerial Yoga
Aerial Yoga was discovered when a yoga instructor and aerial acrobat became curious about how the aerial silks could assist with a yoga practice. With some modifications to the aerial silks, including hanging it like a hammock and low to the ground, aerial yoga that is accessible to anyone was created! In an Aerial Yoga class, we use the aerial silk hammock to assist and challenge our yoga practice. Everything in this class relates to yoga. We focus on breath, alignment, flow, and mindfulness. Many of the postures or sequences we practice in this class will be related to their ground components. Here’s a short video that shows an inside look into an Aerial Yoga class at Aerial Fit.

Aerial Silks
Have you ever seen Cirque du Soleil performers rolling themselves up and down long stretches of aerial fabric? That is aerial silks. Aerial Silks is an apparatus used for dance, circus, theater, fitness, and more. In an aerial silks class you will learn progressions, skills, and sequences including climbing, locking yourself into the fabric, and if you stick with it, eventually drops, rolls, and dives. Here’s a short video that shows an inside look into an Aerial Silks class at Aerial Fit.

Do they still look similar to you? In a few ways they are…namely, in both types of class you will build strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and enhanced spacial awareness. In both classes you will spend time upside down and supported by the material. In both classes you will be empowered and inspired.

Beginners are welcome in any Aerial Yoga class, and any Beginner Level Aerial Silks or Aerial Slings class. See our full schedule and make your reservation here. Happy flying!
