We often get questions about our aerial classes, so we’re creating videos will give you a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on in each class we offer. The seventh in the series is Handbalancing & Acro.
We love handstands and acrobalance. We started teaching acroyoga in 2006, and we think of acroyoga as part of our circus roots. Handstands and acro work all of the pushing muscles, which is a great balance to all of the pulling we do up in the air. Don’t worry though, you don’t need to be an aerialist or a yogi to do handstands and acro. Our class is appropriate for all levels, including absolute beginners.
Our handstand and acrobalance class time is split half and half. We teach the circus style handstand, which is a super straight line from the hands through the shoulders and hips right into the feet. We start beginner handstanders off at the wall, and even have crash mats for those afraid of falling over. As students progress they learn how to use the wall as a tool rather than just a crutch, then how to move away from the wall, and eventually weight-shifting and mobility skills.
The beginner acrobalance student will learn the basics of basing and flying. We take what we learn about a tight body and straight lines in handstands and apply it to partner work. You don’t need to bring a partner, although this class can be fun to do with a friend. We build strength and balance control with calibration exercises and playful transitions. Students will progress towards more and more advanced movements, focusing on clean transitions, flowing movement, and smoothly linking sequences together.
There is no previous experience needed to take your first class. We recommend a weekly practice either in conjunction with, or without, our other aerial skills focused classes.
